No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
