Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
